UPS maintenance: when should the battery be checked?

It is worth checking a UPS while it is still operating predictably. Planning maintenance is easier when its model, installation date, load and last battery replacement are known.

Which changes deserve attention?

Record shorter runtime at the same load, battery warnings or failed self-tests. These can justify an inspection, but do not prove that the battery is the only problem. Changes in load and equipment connections should also be checked.

Age is only one factor

Battery type, temperature and use all affect service life. APC describes three to five years as typical for its VRLA batteries; that is not a universal replacement schedule for every UPS. Follow the documentation for the specific unit and battery. Heat and inadequate ventilation can shorten service life.

Keep a short operating log

Use a simple table to record the date, displayed error code, connected equipment and observed behaviour. For example, did the issue start after adding a workstation, or has the usual runtime decreased? Specific observations make a service enquiry more useful than saying that the UPS sometimes beeps.

Plan testing and replacement

Follow the manufacturer's self-test instructions and schedule testing during a maintenance window, as a faulty battery may interrupt the load. Opening enclosures, internal measurements and work on batteries not designated as user-replaceable belong with a qualified technician. Replacement selection requires full compatibility checks, not capacity alone.

When requesting service, provide the model, serial number, warning message and preferred date. Explain whether the UPS supplies a system that must remain operational so inspection and any downtime can be planned.
